The Physics behind the un-MP3 CD
First of all I am amazed at what I accomplished in just a Saturday afternoon! If I had the R&D dollars and time to dedicate like the the big RECORD COMPANIES, I could take the experiment much farther and even produce a universal standard for GREAT SOUNDING CD's that CAN'T BE MP3 ENCODED (Without noticable distortion.)
Secondly, I would like to mention that I will give you a bit of an idea here of how this was accomplished, but I will not disclose the frequencies. This technology will be worth money to the large RECORD COMPANIES and they will be able to pay for it!
NOW THE SCIENCE
As most know, human hearing stops around 20,000 - 21,000 hz, so if we mix a tone in at a higher frequency it will be INVISIBLE to our ears. Unfortunately it will also be invisble to many MP3 ENCODERS, so we must do more than that! If we mix in a second high frequency tone, a BEAT FREQUENCY will be set up outside of the range of human hearing. Now the fun part! When we try and encode this at 96 kbps, the PHASE SHIFT becomes very audible and noisy almost like gurgling water. The effect is less pronounced at 160 kbps, but with new DVD AUDIO boasting a 96,000 hz sampling rate, the same effect could be heard with 192 kbps ENCODER using much LOUDER TONES at TWICE THE FREQUENCY, because now we are getting WAY WAY out of the range of human hearing. So the distortion in the encoded DVD MP3 will be much worse!
"JUST FILTER OUT THE HIGHS" I heard someone saying! Well let's just say that there are also SUB-HARMONICS for some of the TONES which add SPARKLE AND CLARITY. Filter out the tones and you will also filter out some of the sparkle!
